Disagree completely. ChatGPT does not have the capacity neither the responsibility to be the author of a scientific paper.

Right, I hold the same view point.

But how can we account for the fact that the new versions of chatgpt (gpt4 ) performing quite exceptionally in major standardized test. [https://openai.com/research/gpt-4]

Can that be a suitable testimony to prove its academic capabilities?

It can be correct and even smarter, sure. It's trained on the corpus of the WWW, and always has access to it. But to assign it responsibility and give it credit for writing a paper? Deceitful and incorrect. I think this quote explains it well : "Software cannot be meaningfully accountable for a publication, it cannot claim intellectual property rights for its work, and it cannot correspond with other scientists and the press to explain and answer questions on its work."
